Andy Burkholder: Qviet
@ Learning Machine
3145 Morgan, Chicago, IL, 60608
Opening Friday, June 5th, from 7PM - 10PM
On view through Friday, June 19th
The Learning Machine Gallery is pleased to feature over 100 selected drawings from Andy Burkholder’s new collection of exploratory graphic narrative Qviet. From sketchbook scrawls to lushly rendered illustration, the exhibit is rare glimpse into Burkholder’s disturbed and sublime inner world.
Qviet is released by Minneapolis publisher 2D Cloud (http://2dcloud.com/), who is launching his book during the CAKE (Chicago Alternative Comics Expo) weekend. From the description on their website-
“Qviet by Andy Burkholder focuses on the abstractions of sex, of seeing, and the fluid relations between the two. Using the strip, one of the oldest formal modes in comics, as the misleadingly benign container for his explorations, Burkholder challenges the reader to reimagine not only what falls under the purview of this form, but the larger conceptions of sex as a set of abstract symbols that inform our daily lives. Qviet stands as an example of the ever expanding potential of comics in the 21st century.”
Andy Burkholder is a Chicago-based cartoonist and graphic artist, who has self-published his work as ITDN since 2008. His work has been published by Oily Comics and Believed Behavior, and has been featured in Leah Wishnea’s Happiness Magazine and Noel Friebert’s WEIRD. His design work has been featured prevelently in Chicago’s experimental music scene- he has worked for musicians such as Ryley Walker and Running, and designed posters for The Hideout’s Resonance Series (http://resonanceseries.tumblr.com/), which showcases new electronic and ambient sound.
