Public Media Institute’s (PMI) new radio station, WLPN 105.5 FM (Lumpen Radio), will premiere at the fourteenth annual VERSION FESTIVAL 15: 100 Watts on April 23, 2015. The eleven-day festival will kick off with a fete at Co-Prosperity Sphere and will feature eats by Fat Rice, Parachute, Nightwood, Thank You, The Rice Table, Big Star, and Sobremessa Supper Club. Live music will be provided by Lord of the Yum Yum, HIDE, Oshwa, Bobby Conn, and Sally Timms, & V4mee. Open bar libations will be provided by Maria’s Packaged Goods & Community Bar, Marz Community Brewing, Three Floyds, Lost Lake, and Parson’s. Tickets to the opening night are $85 and include access to open bar and food, as well as admission to all VERSION FESTIVAL 15: 100 Watts events.
The new low-power station will reach over a 1.5 million listeners in the south and west sides of Chicago. PMI Director Ed Marszewski said, “Right now we are assembling a cast of characters from Chicago and around the world to push the limits of what low-power FM radio can be. Together we have assembled shows that will weird out the airwaves. From day one we will feature blimp casts over Lake Michigan, dusted off gems from obsessed crate diggers, the only sports show featuring local wrestling, audio art experiments, live on-air performances of psychomagical music, advanced electronic sounds, experimental musicology, field recordings, and underground storytelling.”
The entire VERSION FESTIVAL 15: 100 Watts festival will be a demonstration of the kind of radio station PMI will bring to Chicago, and will include a live, on-air reenactment of The Lager Beer Riot, live broadcasts of performances, soundscape and and micro transmitter workshops, the inaugural MARZ COMMUNITY BREWING’s Liquid Release Mixtape, live music, and visual art installations.
