Mar 16th 2014

Please join us for the inaugural meeting of our new study group: Invisible Geographies, led by Ariel March Williams, on Sunday, March 16th at 1 p.m. We will be discussing Jorge Luis Borges’ Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius at this first meeting.

In this Sunday study group, we will focus on the spaces that evade or escape our awareness, and the work of writers and filmmakers who have attempted to map these geographies. We will explore imaginary and symbolic spaces (narrated cities, invented planets, and complex countrysides), philosophical spaces (immanency, and places of transformation), spaces too easily lived or familiar to see (the trajectory of vehicles, the distance across the street, cyberspace and the day-to-day), and spaces in time (memory and monument, lineage and legacy). The subject has been constructed around some selected texts and films, but contributions or suggestions are encouraged as our meetings progress, and as our discussions take inevitable turns and twists.

For our first meeting we will be discussing a short story from Jorge Luis Borges’ Ficciones: “Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius”. To request a PDF of the text, please send an email to contact@addsdonna.com. Participants should come to the meeting having read the text and be prepared for an open and lively discussion.
