If All Else Fails…
Failure is feared in our current culture of skepticism. Uncertainty in these political and economic times leaves no room for contingency plans. Yet our history of ingenuity and progress as human beings depends on failure–it is entwined in the DNA of the creative process.
It is time to embrace failure once again.
If All Else Fails is an invitational exhibition of close-knit Chicago artists ranging in new media, text, paper, fiber, and performance. Individual works will respond to the prospects, hopes, and phobias of everything falling apart…and creating better work from the debris. Together, this group will find solace in the acceptance of failure–so much so that along with creating individual work, each artist will create a portrait of one of their colleagues to frame and exorcise their faults for the public.
These artists crave catharsis. They believe something is gained from getting it wrong. There is insight in Plan B…and C…and D…
To err is human, but to fail? For these artists, that can be divine.
