Ben Roethlisberger Trade Rumors
November 11 – December 8
Opening Brunch: Sunday, November 11, 12 – 2pm
Ben Fain’s installation at Terrain uses spam as the generative source for sculpture and two dimensional works in the stylistic form of front lawn political signage and scarecrows. In addition, a series of books will be available for passerby’s to take.
Ben Fain is best known for his controversial public-performances, parades, and allegorical parade videos, often sited amidst a lush, pastoral Americana. Fain’s work foregrounds the float as an atavistic site for sculpture erupting out of the slow, ritual time of parade, recognized as a living, cultural moment. Fain’s floats become fetish containers for cultural beliefs; infinitely adaptive platforms populated by stickmen and doppelgangers charged with mysterious energies. The absent body, reduced to its simplest symbols, is manipulated through the narrative transfer enacted by the parade, proliferating outwards and creating micro narratives powered by conjecture, confusion and rumor.
Fain received his MFA from the School of the Art Institute, and attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, in Skowhegan, ME. He has received a Joan Mitchell Foundation Residency Scholarship and exhibited at Balloon Contemporary and Monique Meloche Gallery in Chicago, IL; Galleri Babel, May, Trondheim, Norway and at Suomenlinna Gallery, in Helsinki in addition to numerous exhibitions in New York and Miami.
