Laura Davis and Andy Roche: Do You Feel Like I Do
@ Per Populus Gallery
626 W 18th St, Chicago, IL 60616
Opening Thursday, February 25th, from 6PM - 10PM
Laura Davis presents three new site-specific works. With two window installations Davis deals with both artificial “happy” lights and naturally bleak winter ambient light by appropriating graphic design tools and materials for their physical decorative properties. The third piece is a large figurative sculpture made from a vintage wool shag rug, invoking a monstrously mysterious creature and simultaneously decor gone horribly wrong.
Andy Roche presents two works. A new video in his ongoing Glass Flag series will be produced for the show. These videos feature the titular object, originally conceived as an alternative to the other various flags of anarchist politics, but in particular, the Black Flag. The flag primarily figures in the work as a sort of undulating fourth wall. Works in this series attempt a situational relationship with an exhibition space while maintaining a fidelity to the larger series of videos. Roche will also present a lightbox assemblage on the theme of “log jam at the end of time.”
