Himalayan Sacred Art in Contemporary Galleries: A Lecture with Professor Robert Linrothe
@ DePaul Art Museum
935 W Fullerton Ave, Chicago, IL 60614
Opening Thursday, January 23rd, from 6PM - 7:30PM
Each artist in Reimagine: Himalayan Art Now reflects, challenges, and furthers the living practices within the Himalayan region, which inspires questions about where these traditions come from, what role objects play in these traditional and ongoing practices, and how sacred objects—though beautiful—differ from art. Robert Linrothe, Associate Professor Emeritus of the Department of Art History at Northwestern University and the first curator of the Rubin Museum of Himalayan Art, will share his in situ research on these traditional objects, analyzing the techniques used to make these relics, the rituals they connect to and the visual heritage imbued across generations, followed by a Q&A. A specialist in the Buddhist art of the Himalayas, Linrothe received a PhD in art history from the University of Chicago and, through his fieldwork, has concentrated on the premodern painting and sculpture of Ladakh and Zangskar (Northwest India) and the contemporary revival of monastic painting in Amdo (China, eastern cultural Tibet).
Reimagine: Himalayan Art Now features 28 contemporary artists from the Himalayas, Asia, and diaspora whose work is presented in dialogue with objects from the permanent collection of the Rubin Museum of Art. With 18 commissions as well as recent work across mediums—including painting, sculpture, sound, video, and installation—the exhibition reimagines the forms, symbols, and narratives found within the living cultural heritage of Tibet, Nepal, Bhutan, and other Himalayan regions. The contemporary works in the exhibition span a wide range of media, from painting and sculpture to sound, video, and installation. Paired with each contemporary work are traditional religious art objects, ranging from an intricate gilded figure of the Hindi sun bird Garuda to Buddhist prayer beads fashioned from a sheep bone, which have been drawn from the Rubin’s permanent collection of nearly 4,000 Himalayan art objects spanning more than a millennium. Reimagine: Himalayan Art Now is presented by Halsted A&A Foundation.
