Angelo Madsen Minax: Chicago Sex Change 2002-08 In-Person
Award-winning filmmaker Angelo Madsen Minax (NORTH BY CURRENT) returns to Chicago to present a selection of his earliest short videos, recently rereleased by Video Data Bank. Produced in collaboration with Minax’s friends, partners, and lovers, these works depict young queer life in Chicago in the early 2000s, from casual hangouts, BDSM haircuts, and punk concerts at Jackhammer to more intimate revelations of heartbreak and abuse. Alternatingly playful, serious, sexy, and tender, together they reflect on the creation of a community, bonds of kinship, and the process of coming into one’s own. The screening will be followed by a discussion with the artist. Presented in partnership with Video Data Bank and the Gene Siskel Film Center’s “Conversations at the Edge” series.
Angelo Madsen Minax is a multi-disciplinary artist, filmmaker, and educator. His projects consider personal and collective histories with specific attention to queer subcultures and the politics of desire. Minax is currently a Guggenheim Fellow and USA Artists Fellow and has received awards and fellowships from the Sundance Film Institute, New York State Council on the Arts, the Warhol Foundation, and the LEF Foundation, among others. His award-winning 2021 film, NORTH BY CURRENT, aired on season 34 of POV (PBS) and is currently streaming on KANOPY. Rolling Stone called the film “a beautiful, complex wonder” and Criterion declared it “a titanic work.” An alum of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (BFA 2005), Minax is currently Associate Professor of Time-Based Media at the University of Vermont.
MInax will join us to introduce the screening, and lead a discussion afterwards.
