(Chicago, USA) Peripheries Experimental Film and Video Festival, returns for a fourth year, this time setting up residency for two extended weekends at Humboldt Park’s Sweet Void Cinema from September 19th – 29th.

Founded by Chicago-based filmmaker and curator Nicholas Swanton, this year’s Peripheries programming highlights the Chicago scene while representing multiple generations of artists committed to radical and avant-garde ethos. This international showcase brings together artists who have shaped the trajectory of underground cinema with those continuing to push limitless experimentation. Starting with the work of Aldo Tambellini, a “titan of 20th century art” as noted by curator Stuart Comer, Peripheries 2024 immediately sets the tone with an unflinching dedication to the most inventive, original, abstract, and, at times, politically militant work of the medium’s history.

Peripheries 2024 received over 600 submissions which are curated in multiple screenings juxtaposed with rich special programs presented by writer/curator Elise Schierbeek, art critic/curator Joshua Minsoo Kim, and artist/curator M. Woods.

Contextualizing this year’s selections with the history of experimental film, Peripheries 2024 presents rare opportunities to see the work of veteran artists R. Bruce Elder and Daniel Barnett in person. To the delight of analog aficionados, throughout the festival, many works will be presented on film.

In anticipation of this year’s festival, Sweet Void Cinema will also be mounting two pre-festival events starting with a September 8th screening of experimental film veteran Dirk de Bruyn’s Sunday. On Friday the 13th, Sweet Void and Peripheries team up to present a mindf***k of a double-feature as avant-garde filmmaker and Peripheries guest programmer M. Woods presents the world premiere of their third feature film Body Prop, followed by the newest cult-favorite, the incendiary omnibus film, Coin Celleil. Stay tuned to www.peripheriesfestival.com for more information on all of the exciting events.

Hosted by Chicago’s Sweet Void Cinema, an international hub for underground and emerging filmmakers, Peripheries 2024 will be a landmark event for the burgeoning and active community of artists currently making Chicago one of the most exciting film scenes in the world. Individual tickets will be available for sale starting September 1.
Festival passes now available for $80.
