Curators micah dillman and wallace dos santos met in the woods of Saugatuck, MI while on residency at Ox-bow School of the Arts. They bonded over kayaking across the lagoon and their shared use of vibrant colors, patterns, and queer aesthetics in their studio practices. This shared thread inspired the two to gather a group of artists together for Our house.
Our house is a group exhibition of sculpture, painting, and textile works by a collection of artists with queer and trans lived experience. The curators have contributed an installation that creates a house-like form in the center of the space that can be entered by the audience: allowing varied levels of intimacy with installed artworks. This show explores the relationship between bodily ornamentation and the curation of one’s home/interior environments. We seek to explore the reciprocal relationship between the aesthetics of one’s home and the practices within it.
We meditate on how vibrancy, saturation, and pattern can foster physical environments where alternative approaches to home and relationships can thrive. The aestheticized world feeds us as we feed into it. We think of vibrancy and saturation as specific trans modes of display that exist on the body, within the home, and as the substance of one’s artworks. Object language is representative of the subculture one belongs to and acts as a mode to nurture those cultures in return.
