Apr 6th 2024

Ackerman Clarke is thrilled to present Chicago-based William J. O’Brien’s latest and largest set of colored pencil and ink drawings on Saturday, April 6th, after debuting recent ceramic vessels last summer. This forthcoming solo exhibition is the first in over twenty years dedicated specifically to significant drawings. The works on paper, all made from burnished, pigmented wax, and occasional washes of India ink, reflect influences of early Modernists and varieties of craft activities. Most interestingly, the drawings that will be on view stem from self-imposed hurdles where colors are pulled at random to resolve outlined compositions. The produced tension, catalyzed from collisions of chance and choice, refutes easy explanations defined by intuition and low-watt dismissals aligned with decoration. Special thanks to O’Brien’s studio and support network for realizing a necessary show.
