In his series, The Water Lily Family Photo Album; The Early 2000’s—Volume I, Jeffrie Chirchirillo explores the diversity of water lilies and their close relative the lotus. Even though these plants are native to hostile aquatic environments, they bring a unique sense of peace, tranquility, enlightenment, and beauty that has enthralled civilizations for thousands of years. Consequently, they are revered and have profound symbolic meanings. Through his photography, Jeffrie surveys the unique qualities of these aquatic plants—their floating leaves and delicate looking flowers. By photographing water lilies and lotus plants Jeffrie shares in the calm and tranquility they evoke. Enlightenment? That is another matter.

We Share The Same Breath, is a diptych series Susan Isaacson made when it came time for her daughters to leave home and set out on their own. Susan observes, “It was as if we had traded places; they were looking forward while I was looking back.” Wrestling with the loss of their physical presence, Susan sought solace in cycles of nature and reflected on generations past. She traced memories of her maternal lineage through familial artifacts and handed-down apparel, creating images that represent five generations of women. This project, which Susan says “is an expression of the invisible bonds that endure,” received an honorable mention in the 19th Annual Julia Margaret Cameron Awards and is a 2023 Critical Mass finalist.
