Blooming in Bronzeville is Redefining Redlining’s Tulip Celebration on Saturday, April 29th from 11am to 3pm
In the fall of 2022, artist Amanda Williams, in collaboration with Emerald South Economic Development Collaborative, led friends, family, neighbors, and strangers alike in a mass planting of red tulip bulbs in several vacant lots on the south side of Chicago. Flowers were planted in the shapes of homes and buildings that should still be standing, were it not for the discriminatory practice of redlining. Those flowers are now blooming and we’re having a free celebration that honors what was and to rejoice in new futures. Come enjoy fun, games, and activities for all ages. Snacks and refreshments will be available.
Re-Defining Redlining is a public art project by artist, Amanda Williams. Amanda uses her art to spark conversations about the history and potential of neighborhoods that look like the ones in which she grew up on the south side. She likes to create projects that bring together different groups for communal activations of the built environment. Many generous partners, friends and volunteers have helped shape this project. We thank them.
