Virtual Studio Visit: Derek McPhatter
@ Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago
Online
Opening Tuesday, December 8th, from 12PM - 12:30PM
This is a virtual event on Instagram Live. To join, tune into the MCA’s Instagram page, at noon CST.
To kick off a two-week residency in the MCA’s Edlis Neeson Theater, playwright Derek McPhatter speaks with Associate Curator Tara Aisha Willis about his creative process and current projects on Instagram Live. Viewers are invited to participate in the chat and ask questions as they get an inside look at how McPhatter approaches making music-theater and his goals for the residency.
During his residency, McPhatter will work on the music and staging for WATER RIOT IN BETA: A CYBERPUNK ROCK OPERA, which takes place in a future Chicagoland where the characters struggle with questions of history; home and ancestry; and the resilience of black life, while the powers that be attempt to combat environmental collapse.
This project is being developed as part of The Long Dream. It is organized by Tara Aisha Willis, Associate Curator, with the Performance and Public Practice team.
