Concept, Choreography and Artistic Direction by Pranita Nayar

Pranita Nayar, the 3Arts Artist in Residence at HCL, premieres With Rūmī , her multimedia dance work inspired by the prolific Sufi poet Jalāl ad-Dīn Muhammad Rūmī.
Rūmī has inspired interpretations in music, dance and visual arts for nearly eight centuries. Nayar’s own path with Sufi poetry and music has been lifelong. With Rūmī is her decidedly contemporary interfaith view of his lyrical and at times overwrought meditations on love, passion and the Self.
Nayar has choreographed this embodied interpretation of Sufi poets—from Rūmī to Haft Peykar—in deep collaboration with South Asian dance artists, including: Ashwaty Chennat, Laksha Dantran, Keely Morris, and Nicole Volpe.
Their collective work is rooted in Bharatanatyam movement and experiments with “danced” calligraphy and animation. A new score by Persian contemporary musician Niloufar Nourbakhsh is performed live by Manou Magdalena Chakravorty (cello) and Farzad Amoozegar (Tar). Costuming is by Tara Perry, a longtime collaborator of Nayar.
The premiere of With Rūmī at HCL culminates years of development with experts in Persian traditional art forms from translators to dancers and musical composers by Nayar.
