Torchy’s Togs Talkback with Po’Chop | Jenn Freeman and Essence McDowell
@ Rebuild Foundation
Online
Opening Wednesday, August 19th, from 6PM - 8PM
Join us virtually on August 19th for the “Torchy’s Togs Talkback,” presented by our 2020 Chicago Dancemakers Forum Dancer in Residence Po’Chop | Jenn Freeman. This premiere screening of the first chapter of Freeman’s 5-part film, LITANY, will be accompanied by a dynamic conversation with author, writer and organizer Essence McDowell.
Torchy’s Togs was inspired by Jenn’s discovery of Jackie Ormes, the first African-American woman cartoonist and creator of the Torchy Brown comic strip, through McDowell’s text “Lifting As They Climbed: Mapping a History of Black Women on Chicago’s South Side,” which she co-authored with Mariame Kaba.
Torchy’s Togs Talkback will examine beauty standards, style, class, and femininity while offering a behind the scenes peek into the research and development of Torchy’s Togs, providing an exclusive look at Freeman’s exploration as part of her residency at Rebuild Foundation.
