Curator Conversation: Dr. Marcella Sirhandi discussion with Zafar Malik

The South Asia Institute’s Art Director, Dr. Marcella Sirhandi, will speak about the exhibition, South Asian Modern Masters, she curated.

Dr. Marcella Sirhandi has published 10 books and catalogs on South Asian art, curated exhibitions on contemporary miniature painting from Pakistan, Jamini Roy the first Indian modernist and Photographs of the Nepalese Royal Family from the 1930s. She taught South Asian art history at the Kansas City Art Institute, the University of Missouri and retired Emerita from Oklahoma State University. Sirhandi holds the position of Art Director for the South Asia Institute in Chicago.

Zafar Malik is a visual artist, Director of Publications and Dean for Development and University Relations at East-West University in Chicago, and was the Managing Editor of East-West University’s Center for Policy and Future Studies journal, East-West Affairs. Prior to moving to Chicago in 2000, he was based in London, England and was the Art Director of Arts & The Islamic World, a quarterly journal. He lives in Wilmette, Illinois, and maintains his artist studio at the Noyes Cultural Arts Center in Evanston.

South Asian Modern Masters
This exhibition, curated by Professor Marcella Nesom Sirhandi, Ph. D., the Institutes Art Director, featuring the formative SOUTH ASIAN MODERN MASTERS from the Hundal Collection of Chicago, includes those artists who made a critical contribution to the aesthetics of the region from the 1920s through the 1980s. The paintings suggest a similar trajectory in style, media and subject of the region alongside personal and regional diversity. Paintings in this exhibition are viewed through a social, political and cultural lens within the historical context.
