The In Search of Our Mothers Gardens’ wxhibit uses the work of Tonika Johnson, Melissa Blount, Essence McDowell, and Renata Cherlise both as reflections and investigations of Alice Walker’s theories about the nature of Black women’s creativity. Works across mediums of photography, quilting, and painting made by the teaching artists and in community workshops explore and engage Black women’s intergenerational and unconventional practices of making and survival.
