“Take Root Among The Stars: The Legacy of Octavia Butler, Surviving the 21st Century & Beyond” is a studio-seminar course developed for Fall 2018 Professional Practices by D. Denenge Duyst-Akpem based on Octavia Butler’s prophetic and timely novel Parable of the Sower whose primary character Lauren Oya Olamina has a survival “go” pack at the ready along with her travel journal in which she develops Earthseed, a spiritual group with the goal to literally take root among the stars as interstellar travelers.
Please join us for a group pop-up exhibition and reception with refreshments featuring a presentation of survival “go” packs, mapping, and travel journals developed in response to Butler’s legacy.
Additionally, journals & excerpts from will be exhibited in SAIC Flaxman Library display cases after the exhibition from December 12- January 26 along with Butler’s books.
