CAKE MARCH! A protest in solidarity with all anti-authoritarian, anti-fascist, anti-capitalist movements.
4:00pm – 6:00: Protest sign making and viewing of & Eat It Too!
6:00 – 7:00: Protest Cakewalk ($5-$25 sliding scale entry fee, limited space)
8:00 – 10:00: “& Eat It Too” show closing
The term cake walk has a surprising and sordid history, with its roots in stemming from slave plantations, where enslaved people created a dance called “The Cakewalk”, a dance of high-kicking mockery, meant to subtly lampoon the slaveholders and their high society manners. Eventually, when the dance caught the eye of the slaveholders, they would come to the event and judge the dancers like medieval jousts: a cake to the winner!
Later, and to no surprise, whites appropriated the dance and to make fun of “their” slaves and their dance, they would dress up with black faces and mock “their” now ex-slaves and high-kick with hambone rhythm in the minstrel shows. Can you believe it? White folk dressed like black folk who acted like white folk (who (who (who (…))).
Now: Wars. Border patrols and family separations. Pipelines and lead-laced water. (Growing youth movements! Water Protectors! #MeToo!)
Step up! Speak out! Join us for a fundraiser and protest all of the injustice in our world today, and for a chance to win an incredible cake created by one of the artists in & Eat It, too! While you’re at it enjoy some amazing art, some good company, and maybe even a sweet treat too! All proceeds will be donated to the Puerto Rican Cultural Center housing and health initiatives.
