On the Fringe of Mesopotamia: Investigating Urbanization and Cultural Interaction During the Bronze Age in an Unexplored Part of Iraqi Kurdistan
This lecture is presented by Peter Pfälzner, Professor of Near Eastern Archaeology at the University of Tübingen
The University of Tübingen started archaeological investigations in the westernmost part of Iraqi Kurdistan, close to the borders of Turkey and Syria in 2013. Despite turbulent times in Iraq, fieldwork was uninterrupted from 2013 to 2017. Hundreds of settlements from different periods were detected, three of which have been excavated since 2015. Among them is the Bronze Age urban center of Bassetki, and two small rural settlements in the hinterland. Bassetki is most famous for the discovery of a statue base of the Akkadian ruler Naram-Sin (ca. 2250 BC) about forty years ago, the context of which has never been studied. To understand the role of Bassetki during the Akkadian period and to reconstruct the development of this urban center throughout the Bronze Age is one of the major aims of the new project.
