Kevin Blake: A Prosthetic Tongue With A Natural Curl
@ Orbit
1350 W Erie St, Chicago, IL 60642
Opening Friday, February 2nd, from 5PM - 8PM
On view through Sunday, March 11th
Here, in the twilight of history, we stand at the mercurial edge of tomorrow-not in a line of progress-but in a circle, each at an equal distance from eternity. One era speaks to the next in filtered and foreign speech-a dialogue of tragically alien accents. We’ve evolved to lean heavily on our eyes to provide the burden of proof and to produce any testament of efficacy by the life of any generation. We’ve been charged with understanding what the world is by understanding what the world was-information, which we imbibe with our eyes through time-torn filters. People often say, they will believe something if they can see it, but rarely do people ask themselves why they see the things they see.
In this exhibition, Kevin Blake presents a series of new paintings that address this conundrum by suggesting contemporary discourses within historically patterned social contexts. The titles, often stamped onto the surface of the paintings or in the borders, aim to produce a variety of potential meanings within the images. In this way, colloquial language is forced into a more ambiguous space, wherein the potential of the image coalesces through the cadence of the words in the mind of the viewer establishing the individualized understanding of what the eyes see. A Prosthetic Tongue With A Natural Curl embraces the dream of accuracy while understanding that truth is a sound as much as seeing is believing.
Kevin Blake is an artist and writer living and working in Chicago, IL. After completing a BFA (2004) in Painting and Drawing and an MA in art education (2011) from the School of The Art Institute of Chicago, Kevin went on to receive an MFA in visual arts from The Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University (2014).
