Yhelena Hall: And the Names I Forgot
Anna Nelson: The Study of What Remains
The work in “And the Names I Forgot” is designed as a long-term plant habitat. In this body of work, Yhelena Hall uses plants that remind her of places she belonged to, people she used to know, and create a continuum of experience that gives her a chance to revisit and rethink. By putting together plants that do not usually coexist, Hall refers to the place where contradiction can be found together – the memory.
In “The Study of What Remains”, Anna Nelson creates objects as a process of understanding why the world is broken and fallen, why Nelson – and those around her – suffer and feel pain. She documents the discovery of hope surrounded by corrupted ideas and inevitable blemishes. Through the process, Nelson comes to an understanding of grace and an acceptance of imperfection.
Yhelena Hall, born in Ukraine, studied painting and graphic art at the Kharkiv State Art College. Hall received her MFA at the State University of New York at New Paltz, concentrating in Sculpture. Currently, based in Chicago, Yhelena continues working with sculptural media creating process-based and functional pieces.
Anna Cooper Nelson was born and raised in Des Moines, Iowa. She received a BA in visual communications and a BA in general art from Judson University in Elgin, IL. Nelson currently lives and works in Chicago, IL
