Temas (tr. contact, touch) is a stochastic performance. The software underlying the performance integrates the artist into a generative system as a module of analysis. The software interface affords control over probability distributions instead of immediate parameters. Sound acts as a seed; the artist listens, and in return, performs probabilities. All sounds are generated in real time. Temas draws inspiration from Karlheinz Stockhausen’s Kontakte, Morton Subotnick’s Touch and Curtis Roads’ Touche pas. Temas, which generates purely electronic sounds, stochastically traverses the fine line between the organic and the synthesized, forming contacts with representationality.

Dr. Anιl Çamcι is a multimedia artist, who is currently a postdoctoral research associate at the University of Illinois at Chicago’s Electronic Visualization Laboratory. Prior to this appointment, he worked as a faculty member of the Istanbul Technical University, Center for Advanced Studies in Music, where he founded Turkey’s first Sonic Arts program in 2012. He completed his PhD at Leiden University in affiliation with the Institute of Sonology in The Hague, and the Delft University of Technology. He holds a degree in Multimedia Engineering from the Media Arts and Technology Department at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Çamcι investigates tools and concepts for multimodal world making using a variety of media ranging from electronic music to virtual reality.

Çamcι studied electronic music with Curtis Roads, Richard Barrett and Clarence Barlow. His music has been performed throughout the world at such venues as STEIM, The International Computer Music Conference, The Toronto Electroacoustic Symposium and The World Soundscape Conference. His writings has been published through prestigious outlets such as Organised Sound and the Soundscape Journal. He has been granted several awards and scholarships, including the Audio Engineering Society Fellowship in 2009, and the ACM CHI Artist Grant in 2016.

Focus Group LLC is a new ensemble of musicians formed by composer Ethan T. Parcell to perform Parcell’s long-form performance texts and text-based works by epochal composers-poets. The group seamlessly fuses a rich acoustic drone-centric sound and acute attention to detail with a theatrical gusto to accompany the spoken and sung centerpieces of their repertoire. The music takes inspiration from the music-theatre of Robert Ashley, John Cage, and other composer-performers and distills it into a intense, almost private-seeming series of meditations on language, singing, and the creation of sound.

Parcell is a conservatory trained composer and artist whose music has been performed by throughout the US and Canada by Boston Musica Viva, Ludovico Ensemble, the Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestra (where he is composer-in-residence through 2019) and many others. He is an active improviser, and performer appearing on over a dozen recordings as a percussionist, clarinetist, guitarist and singer, as well as co-curating and organizing the record label Lungbasket Recordings. His visual art is mostly in the field of asemic/illegible handwriting, often concerned with repetition or problems of representation, and has been exhibited in the US, Malta, and Mexico.
