“Promised Land”
…”Carlos Barberena documents and memorializes the priceless legacies of immigrants, their nostalgia specifically in the Centro America region. Migration always has been an important subject in Barberena’s, he pays homage to the cyclical, cross-cultural nature and dynamic beauty of the immigrants, offering hope and opportunity amid alienation, welcomes visitors to walk along in order to reflect upon the concept of “passage,” the process of migration and states of transience…” -Alexis Mendoza-/ Curator.
“Promised Land” is a provocative collection of linocuts and Woodcuts that confront social and ecological injustices triggered by the rampant voracity and fraudulent schemes of governments and corporations.
Barberena draws inspiration from the masters and employs a re-conceptualization of their familiar imagery to communicate the lethal sins committed by these institutions and entities.
Carlos Barberena is a Nicaraguan self-taught Artist / Printmaker based in Chicago. Barberena is associated with the group of contemporary printmakers known as the Outlaw Printmakers.
