HungryMan Gallery Chicago presents, ☾ ♒ ☼: work by Wyatt Grant, Lionel Guzman, and Jared Silbert.

With the constant proliferation of newer, faster, more sophisticated modern technology, communication is rapidly changing. The traditional forms of the written word have become less prevalent, often being overshadowed by images and slang. Symbols are used as signifiers in place of sentences in conversation. Strangely, the more advanced communication technology becomes, we are increasingly turning to ancient manners of communication and the formalities of written communication, such as grammar, are rendered archaic.

Through the use of symbols, associations are quickly drawn in the brain and a message is passed along. The symbols ☾ ♒ ☼ give an impression of scenery, much like a landscape painting. However, the combination of symbols and their order could represent an entirely different intended message. The artists’ work collectively consists of shapes upon shapes – images that are not meant to provoke a certain emotion or correlate to a certain scenery. The images are as much about the artists’ intended messages as they are about viewers’ understanding of the messages.
