We forge objects as a way to satisfy a lack, to fill the gap that materialises when something is both wanted and out of reach. The dual nature of the object, a combination of its material existence and projected human desire, allow them to act like bridges, connecting the space between what we have and what we want. The thing that allows a child to turn a twig into a lightsaber.

The works in Between a Rock and a Dream are an attempt to reconcile the world as experienced and the world as desired. They work like puns, bringing two meanings together into one word or form. Existing forms and imagery are drawn from the world, then played with, to create situations that expose habits we take for granted, and allow for alternative ways of interpreting our environment.

———-

Catherine Hu is a Singaporean artist living and working in Chicago. She has a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and is a picture framer.

Yunhee Min is a South Korean sculptor based in Chicago, Illinois. Playing with materiality and form, Min projects the world as seen on objects to reiterate the weight on seemingly trivial matters. Min has shared works at Foundry Art Center, Sloss Furnaces, Stony Island Arts Bank, and Roman Susan, among others.

The post Between a Rock and a Dream first appeared on The Visualist.

We encounter constellations as pre-determined. But, if we look again they can be reinscribed with infinite variability. Just as we can redraw the lines between stars, we do not have to perceive personal narratives composed of memories, spaces, and times as fixed. The work of the seven artists gathered in A Constellation of Instances invite us to reroute our narrations of reality. The work on view challenges static modes of storytelling that value long dominant perspectives, moving us instead towards a position of dynamic storytelling which emphasizes the need for a multiplicity of perspectives. From this frame of reference, the works acknowledge that circumstances change how we talk about ourselves and the world around us at specific times in our lives.

The works in a Constellation of Instances encourage us to conceive personal narration as a subjective construct that can be altered just as it was created. Challenging the qualities that originally made narrative connections meaningful these works ask: How can we assemble stories from the remains of singular viewpoints that reflect our more nuanced reality? And, if our collective reality is the result of the stories we tell ourselves and others, how is it shaped by the events we decide to include or exclude?

Featuring work by artists selected through portfolio reviews by the SAIC Exhibitions Committee: Alina Orlov (MFA 2020), Bun Stout (MFA 2020), E. Saffronia Downing (MFA 2020), Jennifer Traina-Dorge (MFA 2020), Matan Golan (MFA 2020), Olivia Alonso Gough (MFA 2020), and Yunhee Min (BFA 2019).

The foundation of my works start from thinking of struggles in my own life. Whether an incident or daily encounters, hardships spread their roots in one’s life and become part of the person. My interests lay in manipulating the form of an object to narrate these psychological states. This play with mundane objects brings an irony that breaks the culturally learnt norm, allowing the experience of day-to-day struggle; seemingly trivial, yet obtrusive. Through these, my works intend to not only console myself by sharing my own memories, but also the audience by creating an environment that acknowledges that struggle is an idea co-existing amongst everyone. –Yunhee Min
