This virtual event, hosted in collaboration with three renowned queer archives—Wanderground Lesbian Archive/Library, Gerber/Hart LGBTQ+ Library and Archives, and The History Project—will explore how these novels, often dismissed as tawdry pulp, became secret lifelines for women who dared to love boldly in an era of oppression.</p> <p>Delve into the scandalous, subversive stories that pushed societal boundaries and whispered of hidden desires, passions, and complex female relationships. Founded in 1981, Gerber/Hart is one of the largest repositories of LGBTQ+ content in the world. Gerber/Hart focuses on collecting, preserving, and making accessible the LGBTQ history and culture of Chicago and the Midwest. Jen manages Gerber/Hart’s community programming, social media, and communications. Jen’s independent research on Chicago pulp author and activist Valerie Taylor was published in <em>Queer Between the Covers</em> from University of London Press.</p> <p>—</p> <p>Founded in 2022 and located in Rhode Island, <strong>Wanderground Lesbian Archive/Library</strong> collects, preserves, exhibits, and brings to life a broad selection of Lesbian publications, media, artifacts, and personal memorabilia primarily between 1950-2000. We specifically seek to gather materials and stories of Lesbians and Lesbian organizations in the New England region. However, we do have many (inter)national items, including a special collection focused on Lesbian/women’s Presses and music recordings. The starter collection for Wanderground originates from Mev’s 40+ years of personal gathering and preserving Lesbian cultural artifacts and materials, especially publications and music. She was involved in the Women in Print movement for more than 25 years.
