Floating in a Room of Water is an exhibition actualizing a vital aspect of everyday life – access to water – and presenting this intangible material through furniture setting, tile patterns, and kinetic motion.

Rui Sha is an interdisciplinary artist who primarily works in the fields of sculpture and new media. She grew up in Beijing and worked as a furniture designer there before moving to Chicago, where she completed an MFA degree in Art and Technology Studies at the School of Art Institute of Chicago. Her work has been exhibited in places such as Elastic Art in Chicago, Krasl Art Center in St. Joseph, and CICA Museum in Gimpo, Korea. For more information, please visit ruiisa.com.

Saebom Yang is an interdisciplinary artist based in Chicago. Through a space-oriented methodology, her practice is toward the relationship between the changing surroundings/environment and her everyday world as an artist, a citizen, and a living being. Yang earned an MFA in Designed Objects from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2019. Yang has exhibited past work at Wanted Design and as a part of New York Design Week. For more information, please visit saebomyang.com.

Safety – for the run this exhibition, during open hours our staff will be greeting visitors on the sidewalk in front of 1224 W Loyola Ave, and only one visitor (or group traveling together) will be allowed in the space at a time. For everyone’s safety, we ask that you wear a mask if you would like to visit Floating in a Room of Water. The windows and door of the space will be open throughout to improve ventilation, and regular cleaning is taking place to prevent the spread of COVID-19. If for any reason you are not comfortable visiting in person but would still like to see the work, we will be releasing documentation early and often, and if you want to video chat with us, we’ll give you a ‘live’ distanced look at the space. For appointments to visit outside of open hours, and for all other considerations, please write to us at art@romansusan.org.

Roman Susan Art Foundation is a nonprofit art space and platform for exhibitions and events in the Rogers Park neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. Roman Susan develops and supports new opportunities to create, display, and experience art. The 12 participating artists deliberate on this mode through sculpture, drawing, film, and sound. They could be free responds to questions on why we make, creating a conversation on how we operate when we do.
Participating artists include: Jamilah Abu Bakare, Alex Keller, Jina Park, Jonathan Korotko, Itzel Basualdo, Hannah Hirsekorn, Cain Baum, Phil Mulliken, Gibran Mevlana, Nick Bamford, Gloria Han, Matan Golan and Rohan Ayinde.

Title: Sub.Omni.Verse
Space: Performance Space, B1-12, MacLean 2M, MacLean 1215, and Lakeview 11
Curated by Lariel Joy

Parties have historically functioned as a subversive time and space, thus reclaiming public spaces where people of color, queers, femme identifying people, and people with mental and physical disabilities can become visible and have voices. The invitation is to think of strategies for resistance, bringing together diversities, hospitality, and the interplay between kitsch/pop and the sublime in the representations of marginalized people. Some clues are disco parties of the 80s and 90s, raves, drag performances, elevation of the bodies with disabilities in processions and parties, roles of shamans in village festivities, glamorous bodies, witches and their festivities, fortune tellers at festive occasions, and the list goes on.
