Chicago Arts Partnerships in Education (CAPE) is excited to host the one-weekend-only pop-up exhibition Publication Survey / Life Savings by Public Collectors, administered by longtime CAPE teaching artist Marc Fischer!

Visit us in Bridgeport at 1010 W 35th Street, Suite 697 on Saturday and Sunday January 25-26 from 12-5 PM for an expansive exhibition of 90 Public Collectors publications that Marc Fischer has made since 2007, and hundreds of other papers and publications from his collections. Don’t miss it!

Marc Fischer writes,

This will also be an opportunity to purchase any Public Collectors publications that remain in print. Sales will partially benefit CAPE’s important educational work in Chicago public schools. I’ve been a teaching artist with them for over 10 years and I’m thrilled for this mutually supportive opportunity. I promise you that the exhibit will be visually immersive, so carve out some time and don’t miss it.

I hope to repeat this model of exhibition / publication retrospective / and pop-up store in other places and spaces. My hope is to take this approach on the road (even if it’s just to another space on another end of this city) and create more short concentrated activations of my many publications and collections. Do you have tables, light, and a little bit of time? Let’s discuss and make a one or two day exhibition

The post Day 2 of Publication Survey / Life Savings by Public Collectors first appeared on The Visualist.

The Practices in Proximity: Learning and Unlearning from Pedagogical Experiences exhibition brings CAPE teaching artists and invited creative practitioners into a dialogue about their pedagogical experiences. The sites, scenes, and social engagement of learning—whether formal, informal, institutional, or autonomous—impact how the artists negotiate collective spaces and their personal creativity. Manifesting in various ways, artistic concern toward teaching and learning is a nuanced experience defined by proximity to others in improvisation and uncertainty.

Participating artists: Alberto Aguilar, Kayla Anderson, Molly Cranch, Design Studio for Social Intervention, Eseosa Ekiawowo Edebiri, Flor Flores, Katie Giritlian, Kimi Hanauer, Andres Hernandez, Niema Qureshi + Betsy Zacsek, Kirsten Leenaars, Jennifer Mannebach, Jessica Mueller, Timothy David Rey, Emilie Robinson, Greg Ruffing + Brandon Alvendia, Laura Sáenz, Public Collectors, and Gwendolyn Terry.

Curated by media artist, writer and educator Josh Rios.

Exhibition on view from September 10, 2024 – January 17, 2025. Gallery hours 10 AM-4 PM Tuesday-Thursday or by appointment.

Meet the artists and join the exhibition’s exploration of the layered influences of pedagogical environments. Opening reception Friday, September 27, 5-8 PM, RSVP here: https://capechicago.org/event/practices-in-proximity-opening-reception/

Neo-Tang is an ambitious group show curated by Max Morris and Paul Nudd that consists of paintings, drawings, sculptures, and performances by some of the Midwest’s most daring and vibrant (mostly) underground artists. The opening will double as a release party for the publication Corpus Corpus 12: Neo-Tang which includes multiple artists featured on the show and will be for sale for $20.

Neo-Tang is about artificiality, fakeness, and the unnatural order of things. Artificial flavors, false culture, plastics everywhere, anti-caking agents, Polydimethylsiloxane, anti-info, cheese dust, monounsaturated fats and oils, black mayonnaise, the unchecked and unfettered. Neo-Tang is an homage to the pre-adolescent Adderall spiked KOOL-AID Ritalin laced sugar tweeker universe. Our collective ADHD. KOOL-AID (Tang, Flavor-AID, etc.) is a cultural phenomenon and quintessentially American emblem. Revelry in dystopian consumerism.

We look at the theme of Kool-Aid and fake Tang as a cultural phenomenon, as a vehicle for cyanide and LSD, as a low-brow consumable and post-war chemical wonder. The larger themes, we suppose, are artificiality and fakeness, the current unnatural order of things, cultishness and chemical mind expansion, the endgame, the invasion of plastics in our minds and environment, processed culture, and the deliberate policy-driven framing of information.

Publication Retrospective is a one-day event that will take place at Western Exhibitions on Sunday, February 23, from 3 to 6pm.

In 2007 the Chicago-based artist Marc Fischer began working under the project name Public Collectors to elevate sub-cultural, underground, marginal and collective perspectives that many museum and institutional collections neglect. Public Collectors has gradually shifted toward an emphasis on artist book publishing and research, exploring a range of topics from underground music to obscure public library holdings and the criminal justice system.

To date Public Collectors has produced 44 booklets and this one-day event will serve as an opportunity to view all of those publications in one place. They range from offset booklets with print runs of 1,000 copies or more, to Risograph-printed materials and small editions produced and assembled at home with a black and white laser printer. Copies of many Public Collectors booklets will be available for purchase during this brief retrospective. Other materials are out of print and will be presented for in-gallery reading only.

Some highlights of Public Collectors’ publishing-related projects:

Hardcore Architecture explores the relationship between the architecture of living spaces and the history of American hardcore punk bands in the 1980s. Fischer researches band addresses using contact listings published from 1982-89 in the fanzine MAXIMUM ROCKNROLL and use Google Street View to capture photos of the homes. The project exists as a series of publications, prints, exhibitions, events, and a Tumblr blog, that present a visual survey of underground music based on where people lived.

Library Excavations highlights and activates public library materials through a series of publications. The project is particularly focused on materials that may be overlooked and under-utilized, that Fischer encourages visitors to request and view. Public Collectors has authored, designed and printed ten Library Excavations publications to date that observe collection materials ranging from illustrations in US Government safety manuals to advertisements geared toward people working in the prison industry.

An untitled series of five recent chap book-style artist booklets considers the poetry of ephemeral social media posts and sales listings on eBay and Craigslist. GRAVE PLOTS surveys Craigslist ads where people attempt to either sell family cemetery plots, or trade them for items like cars and tractors. SOLD AS BLANK / POSSIBLE LOST MEDIA reveals how people get around an eBay restriction on selling home-recorded VHS tapes by offering them as blank, despite detailed descriptions of each tape’s contents.

Public Collectors started The Courtroom Artist Residency in 2018. For this project artists are invited to attend approximately three hours of court proceedings with Marc Fischer at Cook County Criminal Court on 2650 S. California Ave. Following court, Fischer treats the resident to a meal nearby at Taqueria El Milagro and we discuss what they observed. A publication series, The Courtroom Artist Residency Report, that Public Collectors designs, edits and prints focuses on transcripts of these conversations. To date the project has hosted sixteen residents and created four booklets.

Exhibitions and Press:

Public Collectors projects have been exhibited at the Whitney Museum of American Art (2014 Whitney Biennial), Harold Washington Library, Gallery 400, The Franklin, The Reinstitute, ABC No Rio, The Art Gallery of Knoxville, The Print Center, Seattle Art Fair, Experimental Sound Studio, Outhouse, The Storefront, and at numerous art book fairs including the NY Art Book Fair, LA Art Book Fair, Chicago Art Book Fair, Vienna Art Book Fair, Detroit Art Book Fair, Toronto Art Book Fair, and at Rrréplica in Mexico City.

Projects by Public Collectors have been written about in the Chicago Tribune, New York Times, A/V Club, ArtNews, Artforum, The Village Voice, Art Papers, The Art Newspaper, Sixty Inches From Center, and The Seen

The post Public Collectors: Publication Retrospective first appeared on The Visualist.

“This material will still be here when you leave. Someone else will study it. These images will encounter other times, other faces.” — Akram Zaatari, artist, speaking about the Arab Image Foundation photography archive

The concept of “the Archive” has gained potency over recent years, particularly in the realms of art and culture. Depository of information, home for memory and data, source of inspiration and inquiry for artists and researchers — archives function in a multitude of ways across disciplines.

For more than forty years, Video Data Bank (VDB) has served as a valuable resource for alternative video art histories, and has itself evolved into an “accidental” archive. VDB is a pioneer in fostering awareness and scholarship of media art — from a renowned anthology of early video art, to feminist and queer-focused curatorial projects, and media activist collections — long advocating for this most democratic and widely distributed of art forms.

This October, VDB will host Alternative Histories, Alternative Archives, a one-day symposium centered on alternative archival content, practices, and strategies, from archivists, academics, and artists. Among the questions posed:

-What makes an archive?
-Who is the archive for?
-Is the archive neutral?
-Who controls the archive?
-Can the archive be a progressive tool?
-How can the archive survive in the current political and financial climate?

We are happy to welcome Josh MacPhee of Interference Archive as our keynote speaker, as well as representatives from organizations including: Black Film Center/Archive, Chicago Film Archives, Experimental Sound Studio, Media Burn, Public Collectors, Read/Write Library, School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Sixty Inches From Center, South Side Home Movie Project, and artist Joshua J. Kent.

Co-Prosperity Sphere
3219 South Morgan Street
Chicago, IL 60608

Thursday, October 5th 9.00am-5.00pm

This event has been made possible thanks to the Lyn Blumenthal Memorial Fund

The post Alternative Histories, Alternative Archives: A one-day symposium on the state of the archive first appeared on The Visualist.

For this one night event, Chicago-based artist and designer Bridgette Buckley will share her collection of rave and club flyers spanning from 1992-2001. Buckley writes:

“From the very first party I attended in Boulder, Colorado in 1993 called Back to the Basics, hosted by ‘Mike E’, I fastidiously collected flyers for every event I went to, for events even loosely connected to those I attended or wanted to attend, and for events featuring acquaintances who were DJs, promoters, producers, dancers and artists. I kept them as a record of my own experience and to document that moment in history.”

Bridgette Buckley and Public Collectors have produced a free offset printed club invitation for the event which features a short text by Buckley on her collection. Additionally, Bridgette will be playing music from this period. If you can’t attend, the collection will be available for viewing by appointment for a week following August 13th. Contact Brandon Alvendia (alvendia1 [at] gmail.com) of The Storefront to schedule a visit. Scans from Bridgette Buckley’s collection will be uploaded to the Public Collectors Flickr page.

The post ETERNITY – The Rave and Club Flyer Collection of Bridgette Buckley first appeared on The Visualist.
