A TIRED DOG IS A GOOD DOG, PART ONE
April 29 – July 02, 2022
Opening Reception: April 29, 6 – 9 PM
My mother was raised in Queens, New York. Every year she asked her parents for a dog. Every year she was told she couldn’t have a dog in the city. She watched Lassie reruns, and dreamed of living on a farm with dogs of her own. On her sixteenth birthday, she received a box. “Open it,” her father said. Inside the box was a dog collar. “I’m getting a dog!” she cried. But she wasn’t getting a dog. It was meant to be a fashion accessory. Everyone was wearing dog collars.
table is pleased to present A TIRED DOG IS A GOOD DOG, PART ONE, an exhibition of new work by artist, filmmaker and writer Matthew Lax. This is the artist’s first solo show in Chicago.
A TIRED DOG IS A GOOD DOG is an on-going, experimental film and multimedia project that investigates family, survival and discipline through human and canine behavior. Working with his Collie-breeding parents and their dogs, his co-quadruplet siblings, dog trainers, and the puppy play kink community, Lax explores the rituals by which humans tame and use animals to mitigate disaster and themselves.
Matthew Lax lives in Los Angeles with his dog. His films and video installations have been screened and exhibited at the Viennale (Austria), IHME Contemporary (Helsinki), MIX New York, Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery (LAMAG), and Los Angeles Contemporary Archive (LACA), among others. Lax’s writing has appeared in print and online publications including MARCH Journal, Los Angeles Review of Books, and ArtPractical (San Francisco).
