“How did we get here?” is a two-person exhibit by Jeff Corwin and Tulika Ladsariya. Their work collectively explores their personal narratives at an unprecedented time and reflects our own inward struggle. Jeff’s journey starts with his father’s death and takes us through his exploration of gun violence. “The images are not subtle. Nor is the subject matter. The violence that we face every single day is very real”. Tulika shares her story as an immigrant mother and reflects upon borders as layered abstract spaces. Drawing from the quote “When we tell our own stories, it shapes who we are, how we grow, survive and blossom”, she struggles with the notion of the outsider and the fragility of the desire to be ‘American’.
Their work offers us a space to reflect on “How did we get here?” It also offers opportunities to look for ways to connect our meaning, our truth, our community with the larger story of America. We don’t always know our destination but we can cherish the paths that we choose. Through collaboration and discussion, we can look outside our echo chamber and search for a more cohesive reality. We can dare to hope for more equality, more justice, more connectedness, more acceptance and eventually, more freedom.
