About the event

69 For 69 – A Magnetic Fields Art Show, curated by Janelle O’Malley.

A collection celebrating 25 years of Magnetic Fields’ 69 Love Songs.
69 for 69 brings together artists spanning several fields in an ode to Magnetic Fields’ album, 69 Love Songs. A love song is the most common and often banal tune on the radio. So pervasive an idea in music and art how could anyone possibly make anything about love that stands out?
As an homage to the album’s 25th year in existence, each artist in the exhibition has created a piece decoding a selected song of their choice. Each piece echoes 69 Love Songs’ sentimental goopiness and glaring cynicism. The exhibition serves as a collective look into our perception of relationships and all of its complexities. The album is explored by artists both familiar with the work and those who are experiencing it for the first time. Small scale sculpture, painting and photography come together to explore every facet of the musical score.

Work by: Amy Fleming, Matt Irie, Adam Manley, Dean Krueger, Justin Schmitz, Tom Pekovitch, Marisol Cervantes, Lauren Iacoponi, Camilla Dziadosz, Jessica Labatte, Molly Blumberg, Jeanne Donegan, Sebastian Seb, Will Pergl, Mary Scherer, Jaime Torraco, Paul Simmons, Erin Hayden, Emma Vitallo, Kurt Tomerlin, Melissa Steckbauer, Shane Harris, Kelsea Nichols, Allen Moore, Teagan Hoyne, Drew Dzurko, Jenn Smith, Jaymes Fedor, Jayden M. Dale, Jiayi Liang, Bruce Burton, Christian Ulloa, Meg Duguid, Zachary Buchner, TJ Ly-Donovan, Janelle Rae, Madelene Przybysz, Sophie Juhlin, Mike Rea, Michael Leeson, Veronica Storc, Arthur Arthur, Rebecca Griffith, Jen Schneck, Mary O’Connor, Oli Watt, Ben Stone, Peter Kusek, Emilia Lichtenwagner, Natalie Pivoney, Jesse Malmed, Zach Sockol, Sunni Ayers, Jules Fisher, Angelina Diana, Cody Hudson, Nick Garcia, Kitty Rauth, Lexi Raia, Liana Gonzalez, Jonathan Worcester, Brett Brady, Janet Lee, Allison Lacher, Valerie Jenig, Craig Yu, and Andrea Alonge.

Elgin Community College- Parking Lot A (Outside)

Join Nana Shuni Girón and The Great Listening, facilitated by Hallie Sanclemente Morrison, in community around the sacred fire, just like in ancient times.

“Calling all the Elders to Reunite,” international Mayan Ajq’iij and Day Keeper Nana Shuni Giron returns to Chicago to share a message of unity, peace, and love with a fire offering ceremony.

Our intention with this sacred fire ceremony is to provide a culturally inspirational and educational experience for the Elgin community that highlights the indigeneity and ancient wisdom of those descended from Central America to stand in solidarity with all Native and Indigenous Peoples, and celebrate exploring indigeneity as a way of re-connecting to Earth, our ancestors, and our intercultural communities.

Feel free to bring your chair, your rattle and drum, and anything you would like to share at the ceremony.

You may also bring your own offerings such as tobacco, flowers, incense, pine cones, herbs, candles, honey, and any object you would like to be blessed at the ceremony.

The ceremony is open to everyone, and we invite you with an open heart to join us in this gathering around the fire.

In observance of Hispanic Heritage Month, Side Street Studio Arts seeks entries for Neither Here Nor There.

The first-generation experience has always been complex. Some feel a sense of pride and acceptance having been adopted into a new homeland, while others feel disconnected, without a home and feeling they belong to both here and there, or neither. The first-generation experience can be full of contradictions.

This is a call for art from any artist to join in this conversation and is open to interpretation: Is it a contradiction? Do you feel connected to here? Or there? Both? Neither? Is it something else? What defines this experience for you? What is your experience or understanding of the first-generation experience?

The exhibit is open to the public September 6 – September 15, 2024, with an opening reception Friday, September 6, 2024, from 6-9 pm.

The post Neither Here Nor There first appeared on The Visualist.

AREA 22 will serve as the premiere fine arts, crafts, and oddities fair in the Fox Valley. The festival will take place on Riverside Drive in downtown Elgin, showcasing the creations and collections of visual artists in our area. The site-specific installations in this show highlight the importance of Side Street Studio Arts in the cultural as well built environment of historic downtown Elgin.

Curated by @samuel_schwindt, artists Catie Burrill, Jordan Miller, Juliette Morris, Lucia Calderon Arrierta, Sarah Whyte, and Spencer Gale are messengers of material manipulation in the Chicago area — and together are an interdisciplinary group investigating space literally and figuratively.

Through fabric, fur, neon, found objects, and print the artists in this exhibit manifest talismanic values out of interventions in time and space.

Visit us and meet the artists at the opening reception Friday, August 2nd

6-9 pm

Exhibition runs through September 1

Free and open to the public.

The post Material Messengers: Ephemeral Environments first appeared on The Visualist.

Side Street Studio Arts and Going Dutch present Alien Spouse, with performances on Friday, June 28 and Saturday, June 29 at 8pm and Sunday, June 30 at 6pm in Backspace at Side Street, located at 15 ½ Ziegler Ct., downtown Elgin.

Alien Spouse is a performance born of the ongoing experience of Going Dutch’s first residency artist of 2024 Luiza Moraes as she navigates her fresh relocation to the US. Having just gone through the process of applying for a marriage-based Green Card, she has become acutely aware of the skill with which legal and bureaucratic protocols create obstacles for immigrants that border the absurd. As an artist, she has the tools and a topic to fuel her creative process. Making use of the space that Going Dutch has granted her, she would like to invite you to look. The work-in-progress performance is a blend of dance, lecture, healing ritual, and dreamscape. Somewhere between legal forms and dance parties, the hope is to spread information to those who don’t know what the process is like and to honor the experience of those who do.

The post Luiza Moraes: Alien Spouse first appeared on The Visualist.

He received his MFA degree in Graphic Design from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, IL. He has made three-dimensional type as a series of typographic explorations to strive, challenge and seek a new way to create tangible type in three-dimensional space. As a part of his research, he built a 3D printer and designed his own paste extruders to produce intricate 3D ceramic type and objects. His research has drawn interest nationally and internationally. His interests in graphic design are not solely focused on unconventional typography but also explore a diverse area of interests and experiences: artist book, ceramics, web design, lettering, CAD design, digital fabrication, emerging technologies, and art/design pedagogy.

Artist Statement for “Art, Design and Digital Craft”:
My research explores unconventional methods of creating the three-dimensional type and imageries with materials and techniques unique to graphic design, such as ceramics and 3D printing. Today, technological convergence and new digital manufacturing processes have broadened creative possibilities and the perception of the three-dimensional experience for artists and designers. The series of exploration from this research project reflects on the processuality of the digital fabrication and understanding the place of new technologies in creative processes in the post-digital age. In response to this movement, my research is aiming to develop, test, and find the place of the emerging technologies in design process and creative practices. I decided to build my own tools including a custom 3D printer and my own paste extruders, as a ceramic 3D printer was not affordable or accessible. The use of digital fabrication pushes the boundary of the medium in graphic design both in terms of concept and materiality. Likewise, 3D printed ceramic type obtains materiality and dimensionality so that this becomes an involved cross-disciplinary research effort.

Art, Design and Digital Craft is on view in Safety-Kleen Gallery One, H100, November 6 – December 14, 2017.

This event is free and open to the public. Come out and enjoy art, conversation and light refreshments.

BANG! GOTCHA JOE!
Violence and disregard for life have become so ingrained in American society and culture that our collective consciousness is now shaped by paranoia and fear. The media we choose to consume numbs us and the suffering endured by others become nothing more than flickering images on a screen, slowly turning our desensitization’s to apathy and fascination. The black market is awash in cheap weapons and in most cities if someone wants one, they can get one, legally or otherwise. Where change needs to take, place is with the individual. All of us must speak out against violence of any type, no matter the circumstances, race, religion, or creed. This exhibition stands as a monument to our current state of affairs, to our gun-culture, to our kneeling at the altar of hate and intolerance, and to all the victims; past, present, and future. – Dominic Sansone and CJ Hungerman

“It is our sincere belief that mounting this exhibition will benefit the campus community and the Elgin region through our version of “activist” art. We seek to open dialog and foster discussion versus create converts to our viewpoints. The best way to spur conversation, especially with those of differing opinions, is to present provocative images and engage in the discourse that they initiate.” – Sansone and Hungerman
