Elgin Community College- Parking Lot A (Outside)

Join Nana Shuni Girón and The Great Listening, facilitated by Hallie Sanclemente Morrison, in community around the sacred fire, just like in ancient times.

“Calling all the Elders to Reunite,” international Mayan Ajq’iij and Day Keeper Nana Shuni Giron returns to Chicago to share a message of unity, peace, and love with a fire offering ceremony.

Our intention with this sacred fire ceremony is to provide a culturally inspirational and educational experience for the Elgin community that highlights the indigeneity and ancient wisdom of those descended from Central America to stand in solidarity with all Native and Indigenous Peoples, and celebrate exploring indigeneity as a way of re-connecting to Earth, our ancestors, and our intercultural communities.

Feel free to bring your chair, your rattle and drum, and anything you would like to share at the ceremony.

You may also bring your own offerings such as tobacco, flowers, incense, pine cones, herbs, candles, honey, and any object you would like to be blessed at the ceremony.

The ceremony is open to everyone, and we invite you with an open heart to join us in this gathering around the fire.

Join us for the opening reception of Art, Design and Digital Craft, new 3d works by Taekyeom Lee on Thursday, November 16, 5-7pm at Safety Kleen Gallery One (Building H, H100) Elgin Community College. If can you join us earlier, Taekyeom Lee will be giving and artist talk in Spartan Auditorium (Building G, G100) on Thursday, November 16 from 1-2pm.

Taekyeom is an interdisciplinary artist although he prefers to introduce himself a designer using artist’s material and artistic sensibility. He is currently an Assistant Professor of Graphic Design at Appalachian State University in Boone, NC. He received his MFA degree in Graphic Design from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, IL. He has made three-dimensional type as a series of typographic explorations to strive, challenge and seek a new way to create tangible type in three-dimensional space. As a part of his research, he built a 3D printer and designed his own paste extruders to produce intricate 3D ceramic type and objects. His research has drawn interest nationally and internationally. His interests in graphic design are not solely focused on unconventional typography but also explore a diverse area of interests and experiences: artist book, ceramics, web design, lettering, CAD design, digital fabrication, emerging technologies, and art/design pedagogy.

Artist Statement for “Art, Design and Digital Craft”:
My research explores unconventional methods of creating the three-dimensional type and imageries with materials and techniques unique to graphic design, such as ceramics and 3D printing. Today, technological convergence and new digital manufacturing processes have broadened creative possibilities and the perception of the three-dimensional experience for artists and designers. The series of exploration from this research project reflects on the processuality of the digital fabrication and understanding the place of new technologies in creative processes in the post-digital age. In response to this movement, my research is aiming to develop, test, and find the place of the emerging technologies in design process and creative practices. I decided to build my own tools including a custom 3D printer and my own paste extruders, as a ceramic 3D printer was not affordable or accessible. The use of digital fabrication pushes the boundary of the medium in graphic design both in terms of concept and materiality. Likewise, 3D printed ceramic type obtains materiality and dimensionality so that this becomes an involved cross-disciplinary research effort.

Art, Design and Digital Craft is on view in Safety-Kleen Gallery One, H100, November 6 – December 14, 2017.

This event is free and open to the public. Come out and enjoy art, conversation and light refreshments.

BANG! GOTCHA JOE!
Violence and disregard for life have become so ingrained in American society and culture that our collective consciousness is now shaped by paranoia and fear. The media we choose to consume numbs us and the suffering endured by others become nothing more than flickering images on a screen, slowly turning our desensitization’s to apathy and fascination. The black market is awash in cheap weapons and in most cities if someone wants one, they can get one, legally or otherwise. Where change needs to take, place is with the individual. All of us must speak out against violence of any type, no matter the circumstances, race, religion, or creed. This exhibition stands as a monument to our current state of affairs, to our gun-culture, to our kneeling at the altar of hate and intolerance, and to all the victims; past, present, and future. – Dominic Sansone and CJ Hungerman

“It is our sincere belief that mounting this exhibition will benefit the campus community and the Elgin region through our version of “activist” art. We seek to open dialog and foster discussion versus create converts to our viewpoints. The best way to spur conversation, especially with those of differing opinions, is to present provocative images and engage in the discourse that they initiate.” – Sansone and Hungerman
