Asian and Asian American Students at SAIC (AAASS) present “DIAAASSPORA,” the 3rd annual Asian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month celebration!

The event features presentations from guest speakers, Suma Ikeuchi and Eric Hu who will address notions of diasporic Asian identity from two seemingly incongruous professional backgrounds. Moderated discussion and Q&A will follow the presentations. There will be a catered dinner from Chicago Curry House and Joong Bo0 after the presentations, and the API Anthology, featuring 2D works of 14 SAIC students, will also be distributed at this event!

Suma Ikeuchi (http://www.sumaikeuchi.com/) is a scholar, writer, and anthropologist whose work, simply put, explores “a difference that makes a difference” in our sociopolitical surroundings. Thus her ethnographic projects investigate the making and crossing of boundaries between all kinds of “us” and “them”: “natives” and “foreigners,” “pure-blooded” and “mixed-race,” “believers” and “seculars,” “humans” and “divinities,” and “persons” and “robots.” She investigates the politics of identification at the intersection of migration, citizenship, and religion in Global Asia—specifically, by studying the diverse racial, ethnic, and religious groups in transnational Japan. Suma currently teaches in the Department of Liberal Arts here at SAIC.

Eric Hu (http://erichu.info/) is a multi-disciplinary designer and art director born and raised in Los Angeles. His practice has an international reputation for pairing maximalist image-making with typographic nuance for a variety of clients operating in fashion, music, architecture, and technology. Eric previously worked as Director of Design at SSENSE, and led their rebrand for two years. He is currently the Director of Global Design at Nike, where he now leads a team of art directors, product designers, and communication designers on building the future of the brand.
