This Is Where We Draw The Line

@ Uptown Arts Center Studios

941 W Lawrence Ave. 4th fl, Chicago, IL 60640

Opening Thursday, May 9th, from 6PM - 9PM

On view through Thursday, May 9th

There is an imaginary line that equally divides the studios of David Downs and True Markham. Separately the two artists work to find them selves in their modes of expression.

True is a painter creating large scale works that are both intimate in self-expression while referencing historical text. The images in his paintings often work as a lexicon awaiting the viewer to decode their meaning. True aims to loosen the cerebral and critical vices to engage with the curious and strange.

David uses painting and sculpture to represent personal connections to sociopolitical ideas. He uses humor and color to subvert heavier societal issues being criticized through his work.

While their work remains uniquely disparate in theme and execution, the shared space of these two artists allow for conversational connection through debate and exposure of each other’s process. For one night they will open their shared studio for two curated exhibitions of finished artworks and works-in-progress offering a unique opportunity to see the artistic process in action.
