Trans in America: Chicago Love
@ Dr. Martin Luther King Center
4314 S Cottage Grove Ave, Chicago, IL 60653
Opening Tuesday, February 19th, from 5:30PM - 7:30PM
The ACLU of Illinois, Pride Action Tank, the Transformative Justice Law Project, and Howard Brown Health would like to invite you to a special screening of “Chicago Love” from the ACLU’s documentary series Trans in America. Please join us on Tuesday, February 19, at Dr. Martin Luther King Center, 4314 S. Cottage Grove Ave. There will be a reception starting at 5:30 p.m. followed by the screening and discussion from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m.
“Chicago Love” follows Eisha Love as she rebuilds her life after being incarcerated and faces the challenges of trying to get a steady job as an out trans woman with a criminal record. Her story highlights a broken criminal justice system with rates of incarceration through the roof, where people are held without trial, where jails aren’t safe for anyone — and are particularly dangerous for trans women.
The screening will be followed by a panel discussion and group conversation to discuss different paths forward to affect change here in Chicago and Illinois. As a follow-up, we will schedule another roundtable meeting for people to gather, share ideas for moving forward, and talk about the work already being done to address these issues.
