Overlook Field Trip: Ballots & Balance
@ Hyde Park Art Center
5020 S Cornell Ave, Chicago, IL 60615
Opening Sunday, October 21st, from 12PM - 2PM
We are SO excited to be partnering with Hot Mess Yoga, Timna Axel, and the Hyde Park Art Center to bring you Ballots & Balance. As we head into another Chicago winter and more days in 45’s strange world – we want to focus on the power that we all possess. From the power of moving your body, to challenging yourself, to turning off your media intake to take some you time, to our power at the polls! The midterm elections are around the corner (Nov 6th) and we want to share some collective knowledge and resources. The brilliant Timna Axel from Chicago Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights will be speaking about voter rights, candidates, and ways to get involved and show up for the election. Then we will be moving our bodies with Amber from Hot Mess Yoga – decompressing and balancing after the weight of our political smog. Amber’s empowering and playful yoga is for every body!
About Timna Axel //
Before joining Chicago Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights in June of 2016, Timna Axel worked for three years as the Senior Midwest Field Organizer for J Street, the political home for pro-Israel, pro-peace Americans. Timna was born in Israel and grew up in the northwest suburbs of Chicago. In 2012 she reported for the Cape Argus in Cape Town, South Africa and investigated wrongful convictions with the Medill Justice Project. She received her B.A. in History and her Bachelor of Science in Journalism from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism in 2013. In 2017, Timna won YNPN Chicago’s Young Nonprofit Professional of the Year Award. She was also part of a joint City Bureau and South Side Weekly reporting team that received a 2017 Peter Lisagor Award for Best In-depth Reporting in a Community Newspaper.
About Hot Mess Yoga //
I’m Amber and I’m a Hot Ass Mess! I’m a certified yoga instructor and working comedy queen… and I have a community of cellulite on the back of my thighs. If you aren’t an Instagram model but still want a space to strengthen your yoga practice – or hell just a reason to logout of Netflix for one night – come practice with Hot Mess Yoga. I’m gonna eat whatever I want and not worry about how my ass looks in leggings. I’m gonna clear my mind and get in a work out even if I haven’t shaved my armpits. I’m gonna curse out loud when my thighs are burning during Warrior 1. If any of this resonates with y’all, you must be ready to sweat! Bring your towel, mat and water and I’ll bring the tunes and the flow.
