gallery no one is excited to present Earth Is So Much More Wonderful Than Heaven, a solo exhibition by Elaine Hsu.
Elaine Hsu attempts to make sense of the world and its incurable condition of nostalgia by treating it with curiosity and care. In order to cope with seemingly unexplainable phenomenon like increasing distance, passing of time, and shortcomings of memory, “Earth Is So Much More Wonderful Than Heaven” presents objects that commemorate precious moments and unlikely happenings. This collection of work explores color, tactile experiences, and drawing as a means to grasp less concrete parts of the multiverse. Fossils, cookies, and enamel charms are considered with quilts and other handmade objects to better understand notions of sentimentality, wishes, fate, longing, and belonging.
Elaine Hsu (b. 1997) is an interdisciplinary artist from the SF Bay Area. She uses play and color to manipulate spacial narratives and create objects that fill her memory palace. Her sculptures, quilts, and drawings aim to raise questions about the way we experience nostalgia, the world of things, and conventions of childhood. She has exhibited work at ADDS DONNA (Chicago, IL), SAIC’s SITE Sharp (Chicago, IL), Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago (Chicago, IL), After School Special (Milwaukee, WI), and Zhou B Art Center (Chicago, IL). She is a recipient of the 2016 Contemporary Practices Outstanding New Artist Award (Chicago, IL) and 2018 Lunch Money Grant (Milwaukee, WI).
