Everyday Resistance: The Art of Living in Black Chicago
@ Arts Incubator
301 E Garfield Blvd, Chicago, IL 60637
Opening Wednesday, May 23rd, from 6PM - 8PM
On view through Friday, July 6th
The South Side Home Movie Project presents an exhibition of private film footage gathered from residents of Chicago’s South Side neighborhoods. In collaboration with Arts + Public Life, this exhibition features home movies captured by amateur South Side filmmakers animating a domestic space and offering a visual record and aesthetic of Blackness from the 1940s through the 1980s. This rich visual inheritance tells us much about Black control over the Black image and gives viewers the opportunity to witness moments of leisure and performativity lived within the constraints and confines of racism and anti-Blackness.
View films from: Alsup Smith Collection, The Frederick Atkins Collection, Byrd-Forshey Collection, Lynette Frazier Collection, Jay Kavanaugh Collection, Glenna Kiner Collection, Philip Maxwell Sr. Collection, Ellis McClelland Collection, Charles Merrifield Collection, Niki Collection, Nicholas Osborn Collection, Jean Patton Collection, The David D. and Margaret T. Pitts Collection, Dr. George Reed Sr. Collection, Leroy Roberson Collection, and Gustina Steele Collection
Related programs to be announced.
