Dr. Rachel Epp Buller: The Care of Letters
@ Compound Yellow
244 Lake St, Oak Park, IL 60302
Opening Sunday, April 8th, from 3PM - 5PM
This performative reading and presentation explores letter-writing as an act of relational care and as a productive mode for thinking together about ways of being in our world, past present and future. Beginning from the premise that handwritten epistolary exchanges facilitate generative thinking, Rachel Epp Buller and invited dialogue partner Christa Donner will think through wide-ranging topics, from feminist science fiction to maternal studies, from theories of handwork to theories of the Anthropocene, and posit that understanding an ethics of care may be fundamental to everything.
Dr. Rachel Epp Buller is a feminist art historian printmaker book artist and mother of three. Much of her artistic, written, and curatorial work addresses intersections of art and the maternal, including her book, Reconciling Art and Mothering and the forthcoming Inappropriate Bodies: Art, Design, and Maternity. Through her epistolary praxis, she explores the sharing of words not only through letters but also through letterpress and monotype printmaking, book arts, and embroidery. She is currently Associate Professor of Visual Arts and Design at Bethel College.
