For her fourth solo exhibition at moniquemeloche, Carrie Schneider presents Moon Drawings, a new body of unique silver gelatin prints. Created in North Carolina’s rural Blue Ridge Mountains, the series marks a full twenty-eight-day moon cycle of labor, during which the artist used a medium format 6×7 camera to photograph the night sky. Schneider exposed the same thirty rolls of film on a nightly basis, sometimes rewinding and shooting again multiple times in one night – resulting in approximately 300 unique images.

Time, seriality, and chance are forces previously harnessed by Schneider in past series such as Reading Women and Burning House. Echoing the experiments of early photographic pioneers, Schneider returns to these primordial interests in the Moon Drawings, pushing them to a quiet extreme. Enacting the solitary pursuit of moon-gazing – a wholly human activity of awe, spiritual exploration, and scientific inquiry that spans millennia – Schneider captures the moon’s natural system as activated by time. At once a document of Schneider’s experience of the process, and an imperfect testament to lunar movement, the Moon Drawings invite and disrupt concrete knowing. Schneider thus reveals the fundamental tension at the heart of her chosen medium, with the loaded figure of the moon as a weighty, wondrous subject and accomplice.

A concurrent presentation of Schneider’s film Burning House (2011-2013) will take place in the gallery’s porcelain projects video space for the duration of the exhibition. Copies of Schneider’s latest monograph, Nine Trips Around the Sun, published by University Galleries of Illinois State University, will be available for purchase.

Carrie Schneider (b. Chicago, 1979) earned her BFA from Carnegie Mellon University in 2001 and her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2007. Schneider participated in the 2016 Whitney Independent Study Program, had a year-long Fulbright Fellowship at the Kuvataideakatemia Finnish Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki, Finland in 2008, and attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in 2007. Schneider has had solo shows at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, IL; The Haggerty Museum, Milwaukee, WI; The Mattress Factory Art Museum, Pittsburgh, PA; Finnish Museum of Photography Helsinki, Finland; Galleri KiT/Trondheim Academy of Art, Norway; University Galleries at Illinois State University, Normal, IL; California Museum of Photography, UC Riverside; and Slought, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA. Group shows and screenings include the 2nd Changjang International Photography and Video Biennale, Chongquing, China; the 2011 Pittsburgh Biennial at The Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh; The Kitchen, New York; Dumbo Arts Center, Brooklyn; Columbia College, Chicago; Artspace, New Haven, and the Kunsthal Charlottenborg Copenhagen, Denmark. Schneider’s monograph, Nine Trips Around the Sun, was published in 2016 on the occasion of her solo exhibition at University Galleries of ISU. Schneider will present Reading Women as a large-scale public project for Unscripted Bal Harbour, curated by Kendra Paitz and Claire Breukel, in collaboration with ISU, November 19, 2017 to February 28, 2018; a screening of her film Reading Women will take place at Pérez Art Museum Miami on November 18, 2017. Works from Reading Women will also be presented in moniquemeloche’s booth at UNTITLED Miami Beach, December 5 through 10, 2017. An 11-year survey of Schneider’s work, More than Private, curated by Kaja Silverman, is currently on view at University of Pennsylvania’s Slought through November 30. Schneider serves on the Board of Iceberg Projects, Chicago, as well as MacArthur Fellow Kyle Abraham’s Abraham.In.Motion, New York. Schneider is Photography Department Visiting Associate Professor at Pratt Institute, New York, and is part of the core faculty at International Center of Photography/Bard College’s MFA Program, New York. She lives and works in Brooklyn and Hudson, New York.
