Michael x. Ryan: under-foot: walking through Wicker Park

@ President’s Gallery HWC

30 E Lake St, 1105, Chicago, IL 60601

Opening Monday, April 25th, from 4PM - 6PM

On view through Friday, June 3rd

In this exhibition, Ryan will be presenting pieces from his ongoing Roadstains series. These works evoke micro and macro levels of perception by magnifying liquid spilled, leaked or poured out onto city streets and sidewalks, which he discovers while walking. These stains are recorded as they respond to force, heat, absorption rates of the earth, gravity, etc, and are rendered large, similar to a map of a large land or water mass. The individual titles give reference to a precise location and time, bringing the monochrome, monolithic nature of the finished form of these pieces back down to the pavement. In the context of the President’s Gallery, which is an office workplace and gallery space simultaneously, Ryan’s mundane monumentality lends subtle humor to the daily routine.
