There are painters but not painting

Within the genre of painting there are histories, tastes and the history of taste. In painting now the viewer is challenged to comprehend a formal language, built on reactions against its own history and the inclusion of other practices. Over time it has broken into dialects, whose pure symbolic form can result in an emptied text or prolixity at the extreme. This singular practice, “…has been continued by constantly being tested against that which stands outside painting as art: the photograph, the written word, decoration, literalness, or objecthood.”
Acknowledging the idiomatic condition of its conventional equipment and the potential for difference between the makers use of it, Under Run includes abstract, figurative, pattern and narrative works; works based on ideas of space, the portrait, and home and images dealing with impact, systems and chance. By bringing together these artists the aim has been to both make a statement about painting¹s vitality and moreover to reclaim and assert the mitigating factor of preference in the history of art by making a space available for these artists¹ works to be seen.
Given the conditions under which painting resides, what makes a work good, worthy or interesting? It seems that the test of time is and always will be: does the image last for an individual viewer regardless of its sanctioned status. These artists¹ works are lasting and persistently compelling beyond mere aesthetic appeal. They present within the formal parameters of painting a view and reflection of the postmodern struggle with content, identity, and structure. This show adds to the running debate over taste and understanding which is inherent in contemporary painting.
