The Overlook Presents: Expression in the Age of Trump

What does it mean to be a documentarian in today’s age? What role does the documentarian play in America’s political climate? As artists, photographers, journalists, and filmmakers how do we challenge the Trump administration’s criticism of the media while learning how to navigate through this new era of politics? How are our artistic practices changing in the face of the Trump Era?

Join multimedia artist Jacob Yeung, documentary artist and creative director Chelsey Sinceŕray, documentary artist Colleen Plumb, and journalist Ritu Prasad in a discussion about documentary art and journalism coverage in a political climate where media and artistic expression is discouraged. This panel discussion will be moderated by the Overlook’s past artist-in-residence, Samantha Belden. This panel concludes Samantha Belden and Carly Hopp’s January/February residency at the Overlook.

About the Artists:

Samantha Belden (b.1994) is an artist living and working in Chicago, IL. Belden received her Bachelor of Arts in Photography with a concentration in Fine Arts from Columbia College Chicago in 2016. Her photographic practice is concerned with ideas of familial intimacy, history, preservation, and aging. Belden is a recent artist-in-residence at The Overlook with artistic collaborator, Carly Hopps.

Carly Hopps is a Bozeman, Montana based writer, whose desire to challenge her own perspective on the world guides her work. After growing up in Maine, she received her BA in Marketing from Columbia College Chicago.

Colleen Plumb (American, born Chicago, IL, 1970) works in photography, video, public installation, and object making, about the animal-human relationship. Her work is held in several permanent collections and has been widely exhibited. Her work has been part of The Chicago Project at Catherine Edelman Gallery in Chicago since 2005 and the Midwest Photographers Project at the Museum of Contemporary Photography since 2003. She has written for the Center for Humans and Nature, an organization dedicated to exploring and promoting human responsibilities in relation to nature, and was a contributor to their newly released book, City Creatures (University of Chicago Press, 2015). Plumb is an Openlands Treekeeper, a Chicago metropolitan conservation organization.

Ritu Prasad is a current Master of Science candidate at Northwestern’s Medill School of Journalism. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of Chicago, where she majored in English Literature and minored in Biology. Ritu was born in Bangalore, India, but has called England, New York, and North Carolina home throughout her childhood; she came to Chicago in 2010 and couldn’t bring herself to leave. As a new journalist, she hopes to focus on women’s issues, food, and culture. She is also passionate about travel, creative writing, photography, and anything related to animals or astrophysics.

Chelsey Sinceŕray – “Graduate of Lake Forest College, I identify as a documentary artist and creative director from the Southside of Chicago. I create by witnessing and documenting lives in today’s urban society. My artistry is solely done through photography, in addition to video and radio under my production “INVISIBLE”, a two-fold documentary project that highlights the experience of rising artists. A few published platforms and collaborations include The Remix Project, Green Label, The Source Magazine, and more.”

Jacob Yeung is a multimedia artist based in Chicago. Originally from Flint, Michigan, he moved to Chicago for college and received his B.A. from Columbia College, studying photojournalism and documentary. Yeung continued his practice photographing a long-term visual and social study of Chicago’s Chinatown. He has exhibited his work in various platforms including galleries, print, and digital.
