Brian Kapernekas: Below the Ground, Above the Fog
@ 65GRAND
3252 W North Ave, Chicago, IL 60647
Opening Friday, December 9th, from 6PM - 9PM
On view through Saturday, January 14th
65GRAND is pleased to present Brian Kapernekas in his fifth solo exhibition with the gallery. Below the Ground, Above the Fog is comprised of paintings and works on paper developed out of tracing the material artifacts and images from previous artworks. Kapernekas began this process with paper as the support. This led to excising, reworking and reinserting portions of the paper. The paintings take this further in their experimentation not just with pictorial space, but the way physical space is organized by the strata making up a painting. The material components of the paintings are cut, inscribed, carved and wrapped, ultimately resulting in objects that create distinctly separate layers of substrate, support, ground and surface.
Brian Kapernekas lives and works in Chicago. Recent solo exhibitions include 40,000 Fathoms Before the Eye and Shapeshifter at 65GRAND and Cabin Fever at Proof Gallery, Boston. Recent group exhibitions include Around Flat, curated by Will Staples, at Knockdown Center, Maspeth, NY, Slow Read, curated by Justin Witte, at the Glass Curtain Gallery, Columbia College, Chicago, Loveland Pass at Grölle Pass Projects, Wuppertal, Germany and Fortress of Solitude at Regina Rex, Queens, New York. Kapernekas received the Artadia: Fund for Art and Dialogue Grant in 2004. His work has been featured in Art ltd, Artslant, The Chicago Tribune and The Los Angeles Times.
