Please join us at Pulaski Park’s Field House for a “Therapy Session” with Dr. Scott Hunter, Professor of Psychiatry & Pediatrics at University of Chicago, and “More Strange Than True” artists Dana Carter, Ann Toebbe and Aaron Walker––a conversation about the artists’ long-distance relationship with space and their experimentation with site-specificity.

Due to the unknown existence of some of these parks, the artists in this exhibition were asked to relate to Pulaski Park in a distanced, mental and imaginative way rather than in a physical way. Although the artworks are site-specific, artists were asked to avoid visiting the space and to instead re-imagine the space with the assistance of a detailed floor plan made specifically for this show, the description of the space by the curators, archival materials, and research. Fundamental to the artists’ project is the dynamic evolution between public and private spaces.

DANA CARTER works across media often using ephemeral processes that convey the passage of time. Carter moves between observation and material experimentation in the studio; a parallel to the waxing and waning rhythm of night and day. Constellations of works on fabric, light, and video elements come together at points of intersection between nature and architecture. Originally from Cincinnati, Ohio, ANN TOEBBE received her BFA from the Cleveland Institute of Art in 1997. She earned an MFA in painting from Yale Univeristy in 2004 and a DAAD Scholarship to the Universität der Kunst, Berlin in 2004-05. She has been the recipient of a Jacob K. Javits Fellowship in 2003, a Pollock Krasner Foundation Grant in 2005 and 2015. She is the recipient of a Sustainable Arts Foundation Grant in 2015 for travel to India. Her work has been show in solo and group shows in the US and Europe. Toebbe lives in Chicago. She is represented by Tibor de Nagy in NYC. Monya Rowe in St. Augustine, FL and Steven Zevitas in Boston.

AARON WALKER is a artist and organizer whose projects often stem from engagements with artist-run communities and the systems of support formed within. He received his BFA from the University of Cincinnati in 2008 and his MFA from UIC in 2016.

SCOTT J. HUNTER, PhD is Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neuroscience, and Pediatrics in the Pritzker School of Medicine and Biological Sciences Division of The University of Chicago, and Director of Neuropsychology and Coordinator of Child Psychology Training with the University of Chicago Medicine and Comer Children’s Hospital. A pediatric neuropsychologist and pediatric psychologist, Dr. Hunter focuses in his research and clinical practice on cognitive and behavioral development in children, adolescents, and emerging adults with neurodevelopmental and medical conditions. He is an expert on diagnosis and treatment within a framework of socioeconomic and cultural diversity. Dr. Hunter is also a collector of contemporary art, with an emphasis on Chicago emerging to midcareer artists, and he has curated six exhibitions of contemporary works, at a range of Chicago area galleries and programs, including Aspect Ratio, Andrew Rafacz, The Franklin, Terrain, and South of the Tracks.
