The national defense and interstate highway system in miniature
and Sad Dogs and Silly Cats by Melissa Schubeck and John Wanzel
The National Defense and Interstate Highway System, is new work from John Wanzel. This installation includes a series of models, audio pieces and photographs that explore the national highway system, specifically Interstate 55. This cultural and historical study explores the legacy of President Eisenhower, and the network of concrete that connects and creates modern cities.
Sad Dogs and Silly Cats, Melissa Schubeck’s recent work is sweet, funny and a little maudlin. On view is a series of kitten and puppy sculptures, snap-shots and a video investigating collective human experiences of vulnerability, isolation, and indifference.
Mr. Wanzel is a current Chicago resident and former student of the School of the Art institute of Chicago. He has been a contributer to such esteemed forums on sound art as the Outer Ear Festival and the Young Composers of Chicago Series. His month long serial radio project, Protect/Promise aired on WLUW this summer. This is Mr. Wanzels second program with Dogmatic.
Ms. Schubeck is also a Chicago resident. Formerly a student of the University of Michigan’s School of Art and Design, Ms. Schubeck is best known in Chicago for her work with Joymore Gallery. Her work has shown extensively through out the midwest as well as Washington D.C., Boston, MA, Bogota, Columbia and Kyoto, Japan. This is Ms. Schubecks first appearance with Dogmatic.
