Ara Lucia: Beyond the Last Outposts
@ Live Work Yoga: Chicago
1470 N Milwaukee Ave
Opening Saturday, June 25th, from 6PM - 8:30PM
On view through Friday, August 26th
Artist Ara Lucia will display a tactile array of abstract works in her first solo exhibition, Beyond the Last Outposts. The opening reception will take place on Saturday June 25 from 6pm-8:30pm at Live WorkYoga (1470 N Milwaukee Ave).
In this collection, Ara Lucia — who has been lauded for her socially activated photographic works — explores her love for the color blue, as well as fashion, maps and text. Overlapped sewing patterns, layers upon layers of paint, and intuitive, coarse marks have resulted in an assemblage of high-energy, textural acrylic paintings.
“These paintings are dense with layers. The honesty with which the materials are handled give the paintings loads of depth, both tactically and in content,” artist Peyton Haggerty Brown said. “The sources she (Ara Lucia) uses as a starting point (shapes and textures from high fashion) are close to her heart and offer a structure on which to hang her intuitional mark-making.”
The paintings’ heavy layers and instinctual marks beg viewer engagement, allowing new memories and associations to emerge.
