Masturbation isn’t the right word to describe unaware absorption (nothing against unawareness or absorption or masturbation or wrong words). There’s no such thing as solo sex or sex that involves a single controlling agent. You get turned on by something — ‘by’ in the sense of proximity. You get turned on by what you read. As you read it, you get quiet and sexy. A text is attractive because it doesn’t reflect you. It floats you. The back float is the most erotic swimming position, the highdive the least. Attraction needs a platform. Like the surface of the pond on which the water striders move, or the club. It’s hard to give up on one object for another; and if attraction ought to be easy (attraction is. else it’s not attraction), the project can’t be to hold multiple attachments but to assume multiple positions, to be in more than one place at the same time. This sounds good. Masturbation is a good way to be in more than one place at once. So is dancing. Dancing in your head means sweating it in rather than sweating it out. Reading too. ‘You make me so hard,’ says one of the parties in an erotic exchange. Me too. I want to make you hard, but also in the sense of ‘it’s hard to finish.’ It’s hard to finish because I keep going soft. You too. Me too.
